A Life Changing Opportunity

My name is Margarita López, I want to tell you a little about how my life changed thanks to the Presentation Learning Center (PLC).

I came to this country 20 years ago, with a lot of pain and sadness for leaving my parents and siblings, with a lot of fear of being in a country that was not mine and I didn’t even know how to speak the language.

I felt in the dark because I couldn’t help my daughter Erandi with homework and doctor visits.

In 2002 I found out that there were some sisters who taught English, computer, citizenship and crafts classes. I encouraged myself and made the decision to come to the classes.  I started in English level 1 and crafts; I felt that a light of hope had come into my life, because with what I learned at PLC, I could already help my daughter with her homework.

In the year 2003 my second child Rolando was born, and I already felt more prepared to help him too. This same year we started the Ballet Folkloric class, and I continued with my English classes until I reached level 4.

In 2007 classes I began preparing to get a high school diploma (GED) began for the first time. Two friends and I started.  Rosa, Angeles and I, my classmates got their GED diploma, but I had to wait a couple more years to get mine, because I got pregnant with my third child Azul. My baby was born and thanks to the fact that PLC had someone to take care of the babies, I was able to continue with my preparation for the GED. Finally and happily in 2010 I obtained my high school diploma.

Currently I am a volunteer in PLC, I help Sister Jane with the computer class, sometimes I help with the citizenship class in Spanish and English, I teach the Ballet Folklorico class, I help in the sewing class for beginners and I help in the decoration for the fashion show.

Today I am not 100% helping as I would like to, but the little I can do I do with all my love, just as my PLC teachers taught me with love.

Thanks to Nano Nagle’s legacy, mission and love for others. I can tell you that the light of her lantern came into my life when I felt so sad, alone in the dark.
