Weeks before the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, held on May 11 in Falls Park in Sioux Falls, S.D., the event planning committee was glued to their phones watching the future weather forecast, hoping and praying that the day would be bright and sunny with no wind. Our prayers were answered, and we couldn’t have asked for a better day to have such a wonderful family-friendly Fiesta. Each May we celebrate the Latino cultures living in the Sioux Falls area, many of whom Caminando Juntos has had a hand in welcoming and “walking together” with them as they adjust to life in South Dakota. Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican American remembrance of the battle of Puebla where Mexican and U.S. troops fought together and fended off the French invasion and desire to take over Mexico and expand into the U.S.
In our estimation, approximately 10,000 people attended the Fiesta. People of all ages came out to enjoy the weather and activities we had planned for the Fiesta. We had live music from two great bands, kid’s activities, such as piñatas and inflatables, and Disney characters. The delicious and mouth-watering food selections made it hard to choose what to eat, everything was so, so good! We could not have done this alone. A big thank you goes out to our over 30 sponsors and more than 300 volunteers that help make the event a huge success!
