Dubuque: Celebrating the Lunar New Year

Picture above, from left to right: Our Vietnamese Sisters Tuyet, Tinh, Thanh, Theresa Marie and Thoa stand beside the tree decorated with envelopes of New Years’ money expressing the Vietnamese tradition of passing on a year of blessings.

The Lunar New Year celebration began on January 25, and extends until February 8, 2020. On February 1, the Dubuque Presentation community celebration was hosted by our Vietnamese sisters and several of their friends. A delicious meal was served and lovely songs and dances were shared during the meal. This is the year of the Rat the first of all zodiac animals. In the terms of yin and yang, the Rat is yang and represents the beginning of a new day.

Four of the sisters are students at the Divine Word Seminary College. They are learning English with enough facility that they will be able to go on to other colleges and universities to study in preparation for ministries back home in Vietnam. Sisters Tuyet Pham and Thoa Pham are Dominican Sisters. Sisters Thanh Nguyen and Tinh Le are members of the Lovers of the Holy Cross Congregation.  Sister Theresa Marie Tran, a Sister of Christian Charity, is an instructor at Divine Word and has lived with the Presentation Sisters since 2013.
