Aberdeen Sisters Providing a Hand Up

A couple with three children received an electricity shut-off notice. The father was a construction worker who missed several weeks of work after having pneumonia. The mother, who just started a part-time job, did not have enough money for bills that month.

Remaining rooted in the gospel values, the Aberdeen Presentation Sisters uphold their mission as they work for justice, both locally and globally. Focusing upon the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, the Sisters continue to serve those most in need.

Through their Good Samaritan Ministry, the Sisters have been providing temporary assistance to people in emergency situations for almost 50 years. This ministry spans across the state of South Dakota and provides a “hands up” to approximately 30-40 adults and families each month.

Sisters interview applicants to help determine needs, while offering additional guidance and resources before providing assistance. Sometimes people have a need to relocate or have an unforeseen expense that makes it difficult to make each payment at the end of the month. This ministry allows us to help our neighbors meet their most basic needs and get back on their feet during difficult financial strains.

Some other stories of people the Good Samaritan Ministry are assisting:

  • Recently, three families lost everything during two different house/apartment fires and needed help with deposits and first month’s rent to relocate their families.
  • A 63-year old woman had complications after a knee replacement surgery that led to losing her job as a certified nurse’s assistant. Health problems prevented securing another job before unemployment benefits ended and she had no income for rent. She is now back on her feet and will begin a new job as a home health worker.

The Good Samaritan Ministry is just one way the Sisters continue to work for justice and further their mission – by bringing hope to families, children and others suffering from poverty and oppression.
