Blessed By Family Visit

Dubuque Presentation Sister Suzanne Takes has ministered as a missionary in Bolivia with the Guaraní people since September 14, 1985. She shares the following reflection and gratitiude for her recent visit from her two younger brothers: Steven Takes (his first visit to Bolivia) and John Takes (his second visit).

In the rural areas, we went to Mokomokal, Saladito de Naurenda and Tomatirenda where the families proudly showed the new trees that they had planted last year after the disaster of 2022. The people of Mokomokal remembered John from his last visit. In Yukimbia, Steven and John appreciated seeing the people and a glimpse of the largest river in the Guarani zone, the Pilcomayo. Unfortunately, the fishing industry has greatly declined due to climate change and polluted waters. The supply of fish is no longer sufficient for dietary needs as well as the previous income from selling of the fish.

Both John and Steve are farmers by trade but also skilled carpenters. While in Entre Ríos, this was beneficial in dismantling and repairing some wooden cots formerly used in the lodging for catechists. They quickly identified other items that needed to be fixed around the house and put their expertise to work. There were also a few card games and long visits.

They were so helpful but were disappointed not to accomplish more as their stay came to a close. However, they are hoping to return again. Sister Suzanne states, “What a grace and gift to have had this special time with my brothers. I am so grateful for their willingness and generosity in coming and joining in our mission efforts. We have been blessed by their presence.”
