Retreat for Campesinas

On a warm Sunday in July at the St. Francis Retreat Center in San Juan Bautista, dozens of female farmworkers and advocates who are leaders in their local communities gathered for a rare day of pampering and affirmation. The retreat offered a respite from ordinary tasks, allowing each woman to choose from a variety of enriching and relaxing activities to meet her own interests. In the words of one of the organizers, “It was such a powerful and rich time for these women to come together.” Thoughtful learning, reflection, and conversations about real issues were evident throughout the day.

The retreat was the final day of a weekend-long conference for farmworkers, which had the goal of supporting individuals to become stronger advocates, service providers and leaders in Farmworker Equity.” Workshop topics included advocacy, disaster and other emergency planning, media relations, tiny homes, and immigration, as well as an opportunity to interact with local politicians. Sister Gloria Loya, a member of the organizing team, discovered that the event director and many of the other team members had been taught by Presentation sisters.
