Updates on Some San Francisco Sisters

On June 25, 1923 a midwife in Ireland took a look at newborn twin girls and proclaimed, “They will both be nuns.” And they were! Sister Teresa Gormally has been a Presentation Sister for nearly 72 years, primarily teaching children, and in retirement teaching developmentally disabled adults. She celebrated her 100th birthday at the motherhouse with some good music and friends. (Her twin became a Good Shepherd Sister in Ireland.) We are grateful to God for the gift of Sister Teresa.

Sister Katherine Jones celebrated her 90th birthday in June, and also retired from her position with Catholic Cemeteries in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, where she assisted grieving families. A native San Franciscan, she has ministered in Los Angeles for more than 50 years. Sister Katherine will be moving to the motherhouse, where she looks forward to participating in the Day Laborer Lunch ministry.

Sister Mary Jane Floyd died August 18 at the age of 92. Following 20 years as a teacher and principal, she worked in administrative office positions in downtown San Francisco. This generated funding for Sister Mary Jane and Larry Purcell to open the Catholic Worker House in Redwood City, which Larry – who as a second grader was a student in her very first class – continues to run to this day. She eventually returned to teaching, this time English to immigrants at the Catholic Worker House. She was eulogized as having spent her life serving others, with joy.
